Take this with a larger than usual dose of skepticism: a screengrab purporting to show the high-class escort hired by New York’s Governor last month. The details of the 5’5″ girl fit the description in the FBI affidavit which detailed the communication between the Emperors Club managers, Kristen, and Client 9, the man once considered a future presidential candidate. And the design of the web page is similar to that of other entries on the site advertising Emperors Club escorts, which has now been taken down. But we received the image from a site associated with Michael Caputo, a known agent of state Republicans; his motives are not pure. (Cajunboy, you have a view: is this the girl?)

We’ve seen initiatives all over the globe created in an attempt to beat blindness, but researchers based at MIT are feeling fairly confident that their development is within a few years of being able to “restore partial sight to people who have slowly gone blind because of degenerative diseases of the retina.” The bio-electronic implant, which is about the size of a pencil eraser, would actually sit behind the retina at the back of the eyeball, and images would be transmitted to the brain “via a connector the width of a human hair.” As it stands, an FDA grant application is already in the works, and the scientists are hoping to have it implanted in an animal as early as this summer. Still, the solution only works for folks who “were once able to see and have partially intact optic nerve cells” — those who were blind from birth or suffer from glaucoma are unfortunately ineligible for the procedure.

A diamond that could fill a tablespoon is the latest object of desire for gem buyers. The 72.22 carat stone comes with naming rights and is expected to bring in up to $13 million when it goes up for sale on April 10 at Sotheby’s Hong Kong. Unlike some other larger stones where cut has to be sacrificed for size, this D-color, flawless gem is a perfect pear shape.

Just four days after Apple announced that the beta version of the iPhone SDK would be available to developers, some 100,000 downloads have taken place. ‘Course, it’s not like we’re shocked by Cupertino’s latest horn tooting, but we’ve all ideas that number pales in comparison to the amount of requests for unlocks. Nevertheless, the real news from the Apple camp is that companies such as Namco and PopCap are apparently on board to bring titles such as Pac-man, Galaga, Bejeweled, Zuma and Peggle to the iPod touch / iPhone via App Store. Furthermore, Six Apart’s CEO admitted that it’s already developing a “native iPhone application for TypePad,” and the VP of THQ Wireless implied that we’d be seeing some of its wares surface here as well. As for release dates? Your guess is as good as ours.

Oh goodie. Sometime “later this year,” Tivo owners will be able to login to their YouTube accounts directly from their Series3 and TiVo HD devices. Using their fat, deceitful, meat sticks on the TiVo remote salvaged from the matrimonial wreckage, subscribers can search, browse, and watch enough content to realize just how badly they suck at Photoshop. Press release available after the break.

That friends, is Acer’s teaser for a new “notebook PC concept” set for release in New York later today. We’re not sure what it is, but it’s not very often that the unveiling of a concept device (which may or may not be manufactured) warrants a press event hosted by a company’s president. In this case, Acer’s Vista-hatin’ prez, Gianfranco Lanci. Whatever it is, that hint of a multi-media, touch controller is not something we’d expect to see on their Eee PC killer.

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Japan_orders_Apple_to_investigate_exploding_iPod_nanos’; Uh oh. Japan’s trade and economy ministry is now officially investigating the explosive nature of the iPod nano. The culprit is model MA099J/A — AKA, the old black and white plastic model already reported to spew “chest high flames,” cause bedroom fires, and explode across the floor. The Japan incident occurred in January when an iPod nano reportedly “shot out sparks while recharging.” At this point, all odds are with the nano’s lithium ion battery. Apple Japan has been ordered to investigate the issue and report back to the ministry with the cause. Kind of like asking the fox what it was doing in the hen house, eh?

Update: Apparently, the Japanese ministry “strongly warned” Apple for failing to report the incident (as required by law) when it occurred. Apple’s filing with the ministry came on March 7th.

Where does Facebook go when it wants to check the pulse of its users? Craigslist of course.

The company just posted the following job offer on the classifieds site, offering a $25 Visa Gift Card for anyone who stops by their Palo Alto offices this Thursday “to provide feedback on Facebook” (what, no stock options?).

Sign up at this URL. As a corollary, we’re offering $25 in straight cash to anyone who leaks information about new features or designs they see while visiting Facebook HQ. Just kidding. Or are we?

According to Ryan Merket, Facebook has posted at least one other user studies job to Craigslist over the past three weeks. Kudos to them for reaching out of their own sizable corner of the web to fill these temporary gigs.

picture-250.pngTime Warner Chief Executive Jeffrey Bewkes has said that Time Warner is open for a deal on AOL.

Bewkes acknowledged weakness in the AOL business and told the Bear Stearns media conference Tuesday that Time Warner was open to combining AOL with another company “whatever configuration makes it the strongest and the most valuable.”

These comments follow on from statements Bewkes made in February where he said Time Warner would split off AOL’s dying subscription business from the online content/ advertising side. Erick said then that “this is code for a sale or IPO, or both. Time Warner should sell off the access business to a private equity shop and go full-steam ahead with its IPO plans for Platform A.” Today’s revelations would indicate that a sale or merger is definitely on the books.

As the New York Times points out, AOL is still an appealing company, even if its glory days are behind it. The company booked $5.2 billion in revenue in 2007 with AOL properties receiving 112 million visitors a month.

The only question now is who, and for how much.
